JOHN CAGE - HOW SLOW IS AS SLOW AS POSSIBLE?

The tempo indication „as slow as possible“ on the score of John Cages piece ORGAN 2 / ASLAP is asking that question. - In 1985 ASLSP was created as a version for piano, but in 1987 John Cage changed it for organ at the suggestion of the organist Gerd Zacher. The question of how to realise the opus leads to the conclusion that “as slow as possible” can be thought and played infiniteley – at least as long as the life of an organ lasts and also as long as peace and creativity in the following generations exist. But the question remained: How long should the piece be? The first organ performance was 29 minutes. A recent recording lasts 71 minutes. From that question a project was developed over the time that caused a worldwide sensation.

 

ROBERT GRAVES - LORDMASTER OF LOVE-POETRY

Robert Graves (1895 – 1985) was an English poet, translator and novelist. During his long life, he produced more than 140 works. He was the son of the Anglo-Irish writer Alfred Perceval Graves and Amalie von Ranke, a niece of the famous German historian Leopold von Ranke. He was the brother of the author Charles Patrick Graves and half-brother of Philip Graves.

THE PALATINATE - A REGION IN GERMANY

The region I am living in Germany is called the Palatinate (or: Palatinium). So this fact led to the project-name as a logic consequence. By the way: it is not by accident, that my logo is carrying a stylised unicorn. The unicorn is part of the crest in my hometown, Giengen upon Brenz. So I carry the unicorn as a hommage to my hometown.

ELISHA GREY - ABOUT THE FIRST SYNTHESIZER EVER

The very first time when electronically generated music was presented to an audience, was in the Presbyterian Church in Highland Park (Illinois) on December 29, 1874. The american inventor Elisha Gray gave this first public demonstration of his invention for generating musical tones and transmitted "familiar melodies through telegraph wire" according to a newspaper announcement.

 

Elisha Gray was born August 2, 1835 in Barnesville, Ohio and died January 21st, 1901 (aged 65) in Newtonville, Massachusetts.

Starting with Elisha Gray in 1874 the line of engineers, musicians and weird nerds who dedicated their life to electronic music is almost endless. Gray was followed by Thaddeuz Cahil in 1898 who showed up and invented the Dynamophon. In 1905 the Composer Edgar Varése. In 1919 Léon Theremin, and many more in the following years.
